Safeguarding Pollack for the Future

Pollack is a vital species for recreational sea anglers, contributing to food security, supporting coastal businesses, and enhancing well-being through the sport of fishing. To ensure the longevity of our fisheries and marine ecosystems, it's crucial to adopt responsible fishing practices.

The Pollack Pact offers voluntary, science-based guidelines designed to help anglers contribute to the recovery and sustainability of pollack populations. By adhering to these practices, you play a direct role in preserving pollack stocks for future generations.

What is the Pollack Pact?

1. Voluntary Bag Limit: Five Pollack Per Angler Per Day

Limit your catch to five pollack per angler per day to support stock recovery.

2. Voluntary Minimum Conservation Reference Size: 50cm

Release pollack below 50cm when fishing to allow them to reach maturity.

3. Spawning Season Consideration

Avoid targeting pollack during their spawning season from December to March, especially larger, mature fish.

4. Release Pollack to Rebuild the Fishery

Use descending devices to release undersized or unneeded pollack, enhancing their survival rates.

5. Rotate Your Wrecks

Vary your fishing locations to prevent overfishing in specific areas, as pollack tend to stay near their home wrecks.

6. Respect the Environment

Minimise tackle loss in rocky areas and participate in initiatives like Anglers Against Litter and the Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme.

8. Data Contribution

Engage in citizen science programs such as the Pollack Fisheries Industry Science Partnership and the Sea Angling Diary to aid research and conservation efforts.

 7. Stay Informed

Keep abreast of the latest research and adapt your fishing practices to align with current sustainability recommendations.
